Far north, where the ground was frozen and covered in ice, there sat a mountain far away from where anyone lived, in an area forever battered by fierce winds and blowing snow. Passing planes could see nothing but a wall of white. Few knew the mountain was there, in that barren, icy wasteland, and fewer still could have guessed what it looked like. That far north, it was thought that tall trees could not grow. Yet somehow, the mountain was covered in them: large, ash-white trees with no leaves. Dead trees—thousands of them!
But the petrified forest was only one of the mountain’s many secrets, and one day, after two hundred years of uninterrupted peace, those secrets were revealed—as giant bug monsters came blasting through an interdimensional gateway, ripping a hole in the freezing northern sky!
The morning had been gusty and cold, as usual. But the afternoon saw the clouds part and the wind die down. The snow stopped blowing and the rickety trees stood still. The weather became oddly pleasant—something that was very rare in those lands. Pleasant—until the clear blue sky turned an eerie, swampy green! The wind began to blow so fiercely that many of the frozen trees uprooted and flew off the mountain. The ground quaked; the mountain shook. And a giant gash formed in the sky as if a massive, crooked mouth had opened!
Electric light beamed down through the tear, casting supernatural hues as a loud cracking sound boomed across the mountain. Through the massive hole in the sky came a gigantic chunk of earth the size of a skyscraper, all covered in strange green foliage. It shot down through the atmosphere and slammed into the side of the mountain like a spear, obliterating the dead trees in its path. The chunk of earth almost seemed alive as its verdant vines wriggled and writhed, branches sprouting out to dig into the mountain’s face, planting itself deeper and deeper into the mountain like a colossal, tendril wrapped tower.
But the gash in the sky and the chunk of earth were only preludes to the most menacing threat to emerge. From the lush, twisted greenery sprung hundreds of giant caterpillar creatures! They came in every colour of the rainbow, with spots and stripes and wild patterns all over their squishy flesh. Their gargantuan mandibles gnashed as they fell onto the mountain, mouths oozing with acidic goo! The leafless trees snapped under the weight of the huge creatures, wood dissolving in their acid drool.
It was an alien insect invasion from a dark, unknown dimension— and it could have spelled doom for the entire world— but as disaster struck, the secret of the mountain awoke! A mirage in the shape of a woman arose from the mountain’s peak, a ghost amongst the turbulent winds. Lyca had returned from her slumber. The protector of the mountain was awake!
